Diet and cardiovascular disease
The role of diet is crucial in the development and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Diet is one of the key things you can change that will impact all other cardiovascular risk factors.

Comparisons between a diet low in saturated fats, with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, and the typical diet of someone living in the developed world show that in the former there is a 73% reduction in the risk of new major cardiac events.

Fat
Research makes it clear that abnormal blood lipid (fat) levels have a strong correlation with the risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack and coronary death. In turn, abnormal blood lipids are related to what you eat.  A diet high in saturated fats (e.g. cheese) and trans fats (often used in cakes, cookies and fast food) leads to high levels of cholesterol.

Saturated fats are found in animal products.  Trans fats are oils that have been hydrogenated to turn them into semi-hard fats.  Hydrogenated fat is found in processed food like shop-bought cakes, biscuits, stock cubes and a range of other products you buy every day. Saturated and trans fats raise cholesterol levels in the blood, which in turn can lead to atherosclerosis.

Unsaturated fats, polyunsaturated and monounsaturated are beneficial for heart health.  They are present in fish, nuts, seeds and vegetables.

The essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6 are found in oily fish and in nuts and seeds.  Our bodies cannot make these acids so we have to eat them to gain their benefits, which include improving cholesterol levels in the body.

But it is important to note that if your total fat intake is greater than 37% of your total calories, then even if that fat is unsaturated you increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. Saturated fat intake should not exceed 10% of total energy and for high-risk groups, like people with diabetes, total fat intake should be 7% or less of total energy.

Sodium
High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  If you have a diet high in sodium you risk hypertension.

It has been estimated that a universal reduction in dietary intake of sodium by about 1g of sodium a day, about 3g of salt, would lead to a 50% reduction in the number of people needing treatment for hypertension.  The same decrease would lead to a 22% drop in the number of deaths resulting from strokes and a 16% fall in the number of deaths from coronary heart disease.

Fruits and vegetables
Eating a diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables protects your heart. Low fruit and vegetable intake accounts for about 20% of cardiovascular disease worldwide. Fruit and vegetables contain components that protect against heart disease and stroke.

Wholegrain cereals
Whole grains are unrefined and do not have the bran or germ removed. They contain folic acid, B vitamins and fiber, all of which are important protectors against heart disease.  Processed grains like that used to make white bread and pasta do not have the same benefits as wholegrain cereals.
Fish
In countries where fish consumption is high there is a reduced risk of death from all causes as well as cardiovascular mortality.

Nuts
Eating nuts regularly is associated with decreased risk of coronary heart disease.

Soy
There is evidence that soy has a beneficial effect on blood lipid levels. Eating 47g of soy protein a day led to a 9% drop in total cholesterol and a 13% reduction in LDL cholesterol in one study of people without any heart disease.

Alcohol
If you have the occasional drink you may protect your heart, but only if you drink in moderation.

Scientists Develop Super Condoms That Kill HIV Virus and Boosts Sexual Pleasure

 

A team of scientists in America have invented a new type of condom that is capable of killing the HIV virus while enhancing pleasure. 
A new hydrogel-based condom that contains antioxidants has been invented by a team of Indian-American scientists at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center.
 
It was gathered that not only does it contain plant-based antioxidants, which kills the HIV-virus in case of condom breakage but it also uses antioxidants to enhance pleasure.
 
Experts say it is the new big player to join the fight against AIDS
 
"We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible. Supercondom could help fight against HIV infection and may as well prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. If we succeed, it will revolutionize the HIV prevention initiative"
 
Choudhury, the lead researcher and assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center's Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, said the researchers hope to test the condom within the next six months and then get it released for general usage.

Unripe Pawpaw Heals Ulcer and Increases Libido

 

A new medical report has revealed how unripe pawpaws can heal both external and internal ulcers alongside increase your libido when cooked and eaten.
Mrs. Aisha Abdullahi a Nutritionist with a private hospital, Asokoro Abuja, said on Wednesday that consuming unripe pawpaw aids in the healing of external and internal ulcers.

Abudulahi said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

According to her, unripe pawpaw contains high percentage of papain, which makes it a wonderful food that helps the digestive system function better. She said explained that unripe pawpaw has numerous benefits due to its high contents in vitamins A, B and C, fibre and protein, among others.

The expert said that consuming unripe pawpaw on an empty stomach helps in the digestion of protein, reduces inflammation, improves immune system as well as helps expel bacteria and viruses.
 
She further noted that unripe pawpaw was an anti-inflammatory supplement which helps in reducing inflammation, including osteoarthritis and asthma, among others.

Other benefits of unripe pawpaw include its richness in antioxidants which helps in the prevention of cholesterol oxidation.

“It also reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes and also binds toxins that cause cancer in the colon.

“Consuming the fruit also helps with digestive problems such as bleeding piles, chronic diarrheoa as well as constipation.

“ Pawpaw consumed in juice form helps reduce inflammation in the lungs especially to those who smoke and those that are exposed to secondhand smoke.

“It is also a remedy for cough, worms, bladder problems, jaundice, gastric fermentation and gastritis.

“The unripe pawpaw in juice form also helps regulate the menstrual cycle especially for those with irregular menstrual cycle,’’
she stated.

Abdullahi further said that boiled unripe pawpaw fruits help in the improvement of potency especially in men.

She also stated that pawpaw leaves was a remedy for people suffering from epilepsy, stomach ache and severe constipation.

She, however, stated that pawpaw has been scientifically proven as a cure for many chronic diseases such as pile, among others.

The nutritionist also stated that pawpaw leaves helps in the treatment of convulsion, malaria, diabetes, stomach ulcer and piles.

Abdullahi enjoined patients suffering from conditions such as diabetes, stomach ulcer as well as gastric ulcer to include pawpaw in their daily foods.

The expert also warned that consuming unripe pawpaw juice may cause allergic reactions to pregnant women, adding that it may induce abortion.

Health Benefits of Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina)

 


Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) is a vegetable used for preparing the popular Bitter leaf soup. It is also known as Onugbu, Shiwaka & Ewuro by the Igbos, Hausas&Yorubas in Nigeria.

Although this plant has been around for hundreds of years, only a few people know of its medicinal and healing properties.

  Bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) as the name implies, is actually a bitter plant whose leaves, extracts, stems and barks are used for culinary,medicinal and curative purposes.  
  Vitamins in Bitter leaf includes;Vitamin A, Vitamin C ,Vitamin E, Vit.B1 and Vit.B2.

  How to extract the Bitter leaf Juice



This can be done, the old school way of rubbing the clean leaves in between your palms with the help of a little water and squeezing out the juice from the leaves.

You can also use a juicer or blend the leaves with a little water, in a blender and strain out the extract with a cheese cloth, coffee strainer or a sieve with a tight mesh.

Bitter leaf juice on its own, is quite bitter and this taste might be a turn off for a lot of people.
 So to reduce the bitterness of the  bitter leaf juice, simply blend it with spinach or Ugwu (fluted pumpkin). If you still find it extremely bitter, then add some sweet fruit juices to it, such as pineapple , apples or oranges.

Dry bitter leaf is also potent, but has to be properly cleaned before use.

Cocoyam (Taro) is a common name for the corms and tubers of several plants in the family Araceae. It is a perennial, tropical plant primarily grown as a root vegetable for its edible starchy corm, and as a leaf vegetable and is considered a staple in African, Oceanic and Asian cultures. 3D scans spot earliest signs of heart disease

Researchers have shown that people with high blood pressure develop changes in their hearts even before symptoms appear.

These changes are known to put people at risk of dying early, and the new work suggests it is possible for doctors to recognize such signs of heart disease earlier than they can today -- by examining detailed images of the heart.

The scientists, from the MRC's Clinical Sciences Centre based at Imperial College London, used specialized MRI scans to create a 3D map of the hearts of 1500 people. They then used the latest computer technology to explore each person's heart to establish the precise changes in its shape and function -- the effects of increasing blood pressure.

This revealed that even in healthy adults a small increase in blood pressure led to thickening of the heart muscle that is known to be a risk-factor for premature death.
High blood pressure affects 16 million people in the UK and causes 62,000 preventable deaths from stroke and heart attack. It rarely has any symptoms and the only way for people to know if they have the condition is to have their blood pressure measured.

Lead author for the study, Dr Declan O'Regan says, "New 3D imaging technology lets researchers look at the living heart in amazing detail. The risk of high blood pressure is well known, but these scans show the earliest signs of damage to the heart may begin in completely healthy people. This suggests that any increase in our blood pressure may put greater strain on the heart."

Dr Antonio de Marvao, first author, says, "This new research will enable doctors to recognize signs of heart disease at a much earlier stage than has previously been possible. High blood pressure is often called the 'silent killer', and we can now see that its effects start much earlier and affect more people than previously thought."

The next step, the researchers say, is to look for any genetic differences between those people who develop the changes in their hearts that suggest a raised risk of developing heart disease, and people who do not develop such changes.
This study has been published in Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging.

What To Do When Someone Has A Seizure

 

Seizure, commonly regarded as "warapa" is a neurological disorder and not a spiritual problem.
  
Here are things to do when someone develops seizure

Tonic seizures
The person goes stiff, loses consciousness and
then falls to the ground. This is followed by
jerking movements. A blue tinge around the
mouth is likely. This is due to irregular breathing.
Loss of bladder and/or bowel control may
happen. After a minute or two the jerking
movements should stop and consciousness may
slowly return.


Do...
1 Protect the person from injury - (remove harmful
objects from nearby)
2 Cushion their head
3 Look for an epilepsy identity card or identity
jewellery
4 Aid breathing by gently placing them in the
recovery position once the seizure has finished
(see pictures)
5 Stay with the person until recovery is complete
Be calmly reassuring



Don't...

1.Restrain the person’s movements
2.Put anything in the person’s mouth
3.Try to move them unless they are in danger
4.Give them anything to eat or drink until they are fully recovered
5.Attempt to bring them round

Call for an ambulance if...

You know it is the person’s first seizure, or The seizure continues for more than five minutes, or One tonic-clonic seizure follows another without the person regaining consciousness between seizures, or The person is injured during the seizure, or You believe the person needs urgent medical attention

Ofada Rice: A Local Delicacy With Health Benefits

Ofada Rice, also known as brown rice, is a local, Nigerian unpolished rice which is non-genetically modified. It is the short, robust and brown rice planted mostly in states in western Nigeria.

The delicacy is very popular in the South-west region of Nigeria, but many who eat it, are not aware of the health benefits of ofada rice. The rice is also good for those aspiring to lose some weight.


1. It has about twice the fiber content of regular white rice. Fiber plays a significant role in our digestion process. Because of this high fibrous content, brown rice is known to be one of the most effective natural colon cleansers which aids weight loss.

2. It lowers the level of LDL cholesterol aka bad cholesterol. Having a high level of bad cholesterol in the body is a primary reason for excess weight because it LDL causes insulin resistance and when this occurs it naturally stimulates the body to store fat.

3. It has two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble fiber. The soluble fiber slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach and promote a sense of satiety, or fullness after a meal. This helps to prevent overeating and weight gain. That is the equation for fat loss; eat less and burn more!

4. While the insoluble fiber is also known as cellulose which is indigestible and has less transit time through the body. In general, the higher a food’s fiber content, the lower it tends to be in available calories. That’s why you can eat a very large serving of salad, which is almost all fiber, and still eat very few calories. And high-fiber diets also tend to be less “energy dense,” which means they have fewer calories for the same volume of food. Thus when you eat brown rice, you are actually eating fewer calories

5. Insoluble fibers also helps the body get rid of some dietary fat. As it goes out of the body via the excretion process it grabs fats and carries them all the way through to the colon, where they are bundled together and eliminated from the body. Hence brown rice is preferred by people dieting to lose weight.

6. Brown rice controls blood sugar and diabetes. It does this because of the presence of soluble fiber. Soluble fibers swell up upon contact with water and forms a viscous gel. This slows down the passage food along the alimentary canal and gives the body ample time so that the nutrients from food is properly be absorbed. This slows down the release of glucose into the blood.

7. Brown rice is important for a healthy heart. Researchers at Temple University School of Medicine report that brown rice is a better choice over white because it has an ingredient that protects against high blood pressure and atherosclerosis.

8. It reduces  the severity of asthma because it’s a rich source of manganese and magnesium. ust one cup of brown rice will provide you with 88.0% of the daily value for manganese

9. Because of this rich source of magnesium it lowers high blood pressure, reduces the frequency of migraine headaches, and reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. With a diet low on magnesium, calcium can gain entry into the nerves and overactivate it. Magnesium helps regulate nerve and muscle tone by blocking the entry of calcium into the nerve, preventing its contraction and keeping it relaxed. Besides, Magnesium is necessary for healthy bones as well.

10. Brown rice provides an excellent source of whole grain for people with gluten allergy and thus can substitute for numerous whole grain foods. People with Celiac disease cannot eat proteins found in wheat, barley, rye and wheat because the gluten contained in them damages the lining of the small intestines so that essential nutrients cannot get absorbed properly, and it (gluten) also triggers an abnormal immune reaction.

11. Brown rice protects the body against cancer particularly it substantially reduces the risk of colon cancer because of its high fiber content and the presence of selenium in the brown rice. Selenium is a trace mineral that induces DNA repair and synthesis in damaged cells and inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells. Selenium is an antioxidant and is essential for thyroid hormone metabolism and immune function.

Selenium plays a critical role in cancer prevention as a cofactor of glutathione peroxidase, which is one of the body’s most powerful antioxidant enzymes and is used in the liver to detoxify a wide range of potentially harmful molecules. When levels of glutathione peroxidase are too low, these toxic molecules wreak havoc on any cells with which they come in contact, damaging their cellular DNA and promoting the development of cancer cells.

Genetically Modified Foods Now In The Nigerian Markets - Survey

 


A market survey carry out by Nigeria Natural Health Online www.kimekwu.blogspot.com has revealed that Genetically Modify Foods otherwise known as GMOs are now in various Nigerian market spread across cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Kano, Enugu, Benin city, and some few others. Our findings show that these GMO foods are sold in high brow super market and shops patronised by mostly the elite in the society.
Our investigations also review how to identify these GMOs from the normal organic foods. These distinctions can be in terms of the colour, outer lining, size and taste of such foods which are mostly vegetables and fruits.
A shop owner at lekki in Lagos, who wanted to remain anonymous, told our reporter: "It is not difficult distinguishing genetically modified foods from the normal foods. The colour of GMO foods are often more brilliant and attractive, their outer lining is thicker their size is more than the normal size. If you see an orange or an apple or a cucumber that is much bigger in size than the normal ones you have, then know it is a GMO food. Also, GMO foods are not as tasty as normal foods and the fruits among them do not usually have seeds inside of them."
Genetically modified foods have come under serious attacks and condemnations by various research scientists who say they are capable of causing chronic diseases in the body. Below are some research result of GMO foods.

1. Multiple Toxins From GMOs Detected In Maternal and Fetal Blood
Research from Canada (the first of its kind) has successfully identified the presence of pesticides -associated with genetically modified foods in maternal, fetal and non-pregnant women’s blood. They also found the presence of Monsanto’s Bt toxin. The study was published in the Journal Reproductive Toxicology in 2011.
2. DNA From Genetically Modified Crops Can Be Transferred Into Humans Who Eat Them
In a new study published in the peer reviewed Public Library of Science (PLOS), researchersemphasize that there is sufficient evidence that meal-derived DNA fragments carry complete genes that can enter into the human circulation system through an unknown mechanism.
In one of the blood samples the relative concentration of plant DNA is higher than the human DNA.  The study was based on the analysis of over 1000 human samples from four independent studies. PLOS is an open access, well respected peer-reviewed scientific journal that covers primary research from disciplines within science and medicine. It’s great to see this study published in it, confirming what many have been suspected for years.
“Our bloodstream is considered to be an environment well separated from the outside world and the digestive tract. According to the standard paradigm large macromolecules consumed with food cannot pass directly to the circulatory system. During digestion proteins and DNA are thought to be degraded into small constituents, amino acids and nucleic acids, respectively, and then absorbed by a complex active process and distributed to various parts of the body through the circulation system. Here, based on the analysis of over 1000 human samples from four independent studies, we report evidence that meal-derived DNA fragments which are large enough to carry complete genes can avoid degradation and through an unknown mechanism enter the human circulation system. In one of the blood samples the relative concentration of plant DNA is higher than the human DNA. The plant DNA concentration shows a surprisingly precise log-normal distribution in the plasma samples while non-plasma (cord blood) control sample was found to be free of plant DNA.” 
This still doesn’t mean that GMOs can enter into our cells, but given the fact GMOs have been linked to cancer (later in this article) it is safe to assume it is indeed a possibility. The bottom line is that we don’t know, and this study demonstrates another cause for concern.
 
3. New Study Links GMOs To Gluten Disorders That Affect 18 Million Americans
This study was recently released by the Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT), and uses data from the US department of Agriculture, US Environmental Protection Agency, medical journal reviews as well as other independent research.The authors relate GM foods to five conditions that may either trigger or exacerbate gluten-related disorders, including the autoimmune disorder, Celiac Disease:
  • Intestinal permeability
  • Imbalanced gut bacteria
  • Immune activation and allergic response
  • Impaired digestion
  • Damage to the intestinal wall
The Institute for Responsible technology is a world leader in educating policy makers and the public about GMO foods and crops. The institute reports and investigates on the impact GM foods can have on health, environment, agriculture and more.
 
4. Study Links Genetically Modified Corn to Rat Tumors
In November 2012, The Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology published a paper titled ‘Long term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize’ by Gilles-Eric Seralini and his team of researchers at France’s Caen University. 
It was a very significant study, which obviously looks bad for the big bio tech companies like Monsanto, being the first and only long term study under controlled conditions examining the possible effects of a diet of GMO maize treated with Monsanto roundup herbicide.
This study has since been retracted, which is odd, because the journal it was published in is a very well known, reputable peer reviewed scientific journal. In order for a study to be published here it has to go through a rigorous review process.
It’s also important to note that hundreds of scientists from around the world have condemned the retraction of the study. This study was done by experts, and a correlation between GMOs and these tumors can’t be denied, something happened.

5. Glyphosate Induces Human Breast Cancer Cells Growth via Estrogen Receptors
A study is published in the US National Library of Medicine and will soon be published in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology. Several recent studies showed glyphosate’s potential to be an endocrine disruptor. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormone system in mammals. These disruptors can cause developmental disorders, birth defects and cancer tumors. 
Glyphosate exerted proliferative effects only in human hormone-dependent breast cancer. We found that glyphosate exhibited a weaker estrogenic activity than estradiol. Furthermore, this study demonstrated the additive estrogenic effects of glyphosate and genisein which implied that the use of contaminated soybean products as dietary supplements may pose a risk of breast cancer because of their potential additive estrogenicity. 
Researchers also determined that Monsanto’s roundup is considered an “xenoestrogen,” which is a foreign estrogen that mimics real estrogen in our bodies. This can cause a number of problems that include an increased risk of various cancers, early onset of puberty, thyroid issues, infertility and more.
So, when next you want to buy that orange, apple, water-melon, cucumber or any other kind of fruits and vegetables in a super market, be sure to look very carefully before you buy.

Nigeria’s rising stroke cases

The recent report that Nigeria records 160,000 cases of stroke annually is, indeed, worrisome. It underscores the seriousness of the problem of hypertension and the endemic nature of the non-communicable disease. The nation’s health authorities should see the report as a clarion call to rise to the challenge posed by this cardiovascular disease that has been widely dubbed a silent killer. They must quickly to reverse the damning statistics on stroke in the country.

According to the United Kingdom-based cardiovascular expert, Tony Rudd, who spoke at a lecture organised by Stephen James Stroke Centre of Excellence in Abuja, 168 people die of stroke daily in Nigeria while 18 stroke cases are recorded every hour. The consequence of this, Rudd explained, is that seven people die of stroke in Nigeria every hour. The medic also warned that the trend might increase if urgent actions are not taken by both the government and individuals to stem the tide.

Although stroke cases are increasing globally, incidence of the disease in Nigeria is more pathetic as experts say it is largely caused by preventable circumstances like ignorance, poor diet and lifestyle, undetected and poorly managed hypertension, diabetes and lack of proper health care facilities.

They averred that 80 percent of the 160,000 cases of stroke that occur in the country yearly can be prevented if there are well-equipped hospitals and  Nigerians living with high blood pressure and diabetes manage the diseases properly.

Since stroke can strike without warning, the best way to reduce its incidence is for people to undergo routine medical checks. The import of routine medical checks can never be over-emphasised. Everyone, especially those from the age of 40 upwards, should go for medical checks at least once in a year.

According to medical experts, stroke, sometimes referred to as cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or brain attack, is the loss of brain function due to a disturbance of blood supply to the brain. Risk factors for stroke include old age, high blood pressure, previous stroke or transient ischemic attack, diabetes high cholesterol, tobacco smoking and atrial fibrillation. The three main kinds of stroke are ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes and transient ischemic attacks. Ischemic strokes are caused by a narrowing or blocking of arteries to the brain. Hemorrhagic strokes are caused by blood vessels in and around the brain bursting or leaking.
Symptoms of stroke include face dropping, arm weakness and speech difficulty. Others include sudden numbness or weakness of the leg, sudden confusion or trouble understanding, sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes, sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination and sudden severe headache with no known cause. Experts also point out that high blood pressure is the most important modifiable risk factor for stroke.

Available statistics show that stroke was the second most frequent cause of death worldwide in 2011, accounting for 6.2 million deaths. Approximately 17 million people had stroke in 2010 and 33 million people that had previously had stroke were still alive. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of strokes decreased by 10 percent in the developed world and increased by 10 percent in the developing world. Overall, two thirds of strokes occurred in those over 65 years old.

Now that stroke cases are on the increase in the country, the nation’s public health educators should enlighten the general public on the causes of the disease, symptoms and preventive measures. Government at all levels should do something to halt the rising cases of stroke. They should not allow the disease to take a greater toll on the population before taking necessary action to curb it.

There should be increased access to health facilities where stroke cases can be treated in all the local government areas in the country. The relevant authorities should also ensure that drugs for the management of the condition are available in all government hospitals.

Health benefits of watermelon

Watermelon reduces high blood pressure in overweight people and could slash the risk of a heart attack, new research shows.
Scientists found that the fruit significantly reduces blood pressure in overweight people, even when they are exposed to cold weather.
More people die of heart attacks in cold conditions because the stress put on the body by trying to keep warm causes blood pressure to increase.
This forces the heart to work harder, meaning people face a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, revealed that eating watermelon is good for heart health and can reduce the risk of heart problems in cold conditions.
Professor Arturo Figueroa, from Florida State University, said: ‘The pressure on the aorta and on the heart decreased after consuming watermelon extract.’
Scientists looked at 13 middle-aged obese men and women who suffered from high blood pressure over a 12 week period.
Test participants’ hands were dipped into cold water to simulate cold weather conditions, while scientists took their blood pressure.
Then, every day half of the participants took watermelon extracts - four grams of amino acid L-citrulline and two grams of L-arginine per day.

The other half were given a placebo, and after six weeks the participants switched roles.
It was revealed that watermelon lowered blood pressure and reduced cardiac stress, even in cold conditions.
‘That means less overload to the heart, so the heart is going to work easily during a stressful situation such as cold exposure,’ said Professor Figueroa.

L-citrulline and L-arginine supplements are available from some health food shops but would have to be taken in high doses to reduce blood pressure.
The news comes just after it was revealed that working out in warm water can reduce blood pressure.
Researchers at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, found aquarobics in warm water can lower blood pressure even in people for whom medication has not worked.
It's not clear why warm water has this effect. One theory is that heat dilates blood vessels, improving the flow of blood through the body.

Little more than half an hour of exercise everyday could cut your risk of high blood pressure by almost a fifth, say researchers.
Doing just four hours a week of physical activity during leisure time could make the difference between a healthy blood pressure and having to take drugs for life.
New findings from the American Heart Association (AHA) suggest the more recreational physical activity you get, the more you are protected from developing high blood pressure

People who exercised more than four hours per week in their leisure time had a 19 per cent lower risk of high blood pressure than those who exercised less than one hour per week.
People who had one to three hours per week of leisure exercise had an 11 per cent lower risk than those with under an hour of activity.

People with hypertension – the medical term – are routinely advised to change their lifestyle and eat less salt, lose weight, drink less alcohol, eat more fruit and vegetables and exercise more.

Hypertension, now killing young Nigerians – Experts

 Medical personnel have raised the alarm that young people in their 30s now die daily of hypertension, a disease often described as a silent killer, BUKOLA ADEBAYO writes
Before now, hypertension usually signposted by high blood pressure, was not too common among the young.
But physicians in the nation’s hospitals said that young Nigerians in their 30s and 40s are now becoming the victims of the deadly disease. This, they said, was due to ignorance and poor management of the ailment.
To reduce deaths occasioned by hypertension, experts have called for increased awareness on the prevention and early detection of the disease. Experts claim about 250,000 lives would be saved yearly with early detection of hypertension in Nigeria.
Cardiologist, neurologists and some chief medical directors of hospitals who spoke with our correspondent said 70 per cent of the underlying causes of terminal diseases such as heart failure, cardiac arrest, kidney and liver failure originated from patients who did not know that they had high blood pressure.
They warned that unlike before when it was just old people who were dying of high blood pressure, young Nigerians in their 30s now die of hypertension.
According to a consultant neurosurgeon with Cedacrest Hospitals, Abuja, Dr. Abiodun Ogungbo, doctors have calculated that 25 per cent of adults in Nigeria have hypertension.
Ogungbo noted that the reality was that only one per cent of this 25 per cent knew that they had high blood pressure, hence the need for aggressive awareness on early detection of the disease in the country.
He stated that a patient is said to be hypertensive when the blood pressure is 140/90 mmHg or above, most of the time.
Ogungbo said, “One in every four adults in Nigeria has hypertension and this is a very high percentage. More young persons are also dying of the complications of hypertension. Sadly many people who have it do not know. Millions of people are literally walking time bombs because of their high blood pressure because when it remains untreated, it causes heart attack, stroke or kidney disease.
“Unfortunately, I and other specialists like cardiac physicians and nephrologists see people with organ failures caused by poorly controlled hypertension.”
Ogungbo said the disease was often referred to as the silent killer because it had no symptoms. He added   that it had been proven that high blood pressure was a major cause of sudden deaths.
He said, “The problem with high blood pressure is that it sneaks up on you. Doctors in Ibadan studied many autopsies and discovered that the patients died from complications of hypertension. Two autopsies studies have also shown that hypertension is the commonest underlying cause of sudden natural deaths. It has no signs, by the time it gives you symptoms such as headaches, anxiety, visual problems and chest pains, it has already done damage to an important part of the body.”
Ogungbo said there was need to educate physicians and health care providers and Nigerians on the causes of high blood pressure to erase many misconceptions.
He said,”Hypertension is not caused by stress, lack of sleep or depression. It is also not caused by the old woman in the village or by an evil arrow sent by a colleague at work or your next door neighbour. It is not that problem at the home front. In about 90 per cent of all cases, the cause of hypertension still remains unknown.”
Also, the Chief Medical Director of Dayspring Hospitals, Agah, Lagos, Dr. Samuel Adebayo, said high blood pressure is no respecter of age, as cases of hypertension in children and adults in their 20s and 30s is rising.
He said, “When I was a house officer many years ago, we diagnosed a 35 year-old with hypertension, it was a shock throughout the hospital. But now, we diagnose 20-30 year olds with hypertension every time, it is no more an anomaly but we are crying out now because it is increasing abnormally, young people still have a better chance of living well with hypertension if they know.”
Adebayo, a family physician, said though the disease could be hereditary, the increase in young Nigerians with high blood pressure have been linked to increased intake of salt and fatty foods, obesity, lack of exercise and inadequate intake of vegetables and fruits among this generation.
He said, “Young people must begin to watch their diet and their lifestyle so that they do not become obese or overweight. Eating fatty and salty food is now a risky way of life no more a luxury. Drinking alcohol and smoking is no longer going to be a trend but a danger. These are all habits that young people must run from if they want to live longer.”
Also speaking on this prevalence, the Managing Director, Pathcare Nigeria, Dr. Pamela Ajayi, described hypertension as a disease of the African race, as statistics had shown that Africans were more genetically predisposed to developing high blood pressure.
She, however, stated that in spite of its prevalence among Africans, more Nigerians were dying of the disease because of ignorance, poor socio-cultural beliefs and poor health seeking behaviours.
According to her, though there is no cure, high blood pressure can be effectively managed for life when the patient is diagnosed earlier.
Ajayi stated that to quickly address this challenge of undetected cases of hypertension to save lives, every Nigerian must know their high blood pressure status.
She said, “It is alarming to discover that four in every five Nigerians with high blood pressure do not know they have it. No wonder life expectancy in European countries is at 75 to 85 years while in Nigeria it is as low as 46 to 50.
“Every adult should know whether they have high blood pressure, normal blood pressure, high cholesterol or normal lipids, it’s important to know your essential health numbers.
“With that, you can establish a baseline, monitor any troubled areas, understand your risks and make the right choices to improve the quality of your life.”
Earlier, Ogungbo noted that a major factor why those that had been diagnosed were still dying of hypertension was poor management.
According to him, many hypertensive patients are not complying with their medication majorly due to cost of drugs and ignorance.
He said,” Many patients say they cannot  comply with the drugs because of the cost but we have found out that because they are relieved immediately they start taking the drug, they assume it has gone. This is a false impression and misconception has ended up being the downfall of many. . High blood pressure is a permanent disease. It cannot be cured via traditional methods or by only prayers. Keep praying but do not stop your medications.
A renowned cardiologist, Prof. Steve Madu, said proper management of hypertensive patients in the country, would save 250,000 lives yearly.  Madu said, “If Nigerians can detect and manage their high blood pressure earlier, we can save 250,000 Nigerians from dying of stroke, diabetes, heart attack, kidney diseases and this will reduce the poor health indices in Nigeria.”

The cucumber is a member of the botanical family Cucurbitaceae, along with honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon. Made up of 95% water, cucumbers are naturally low in calories, fat, cholesterol and sodium.

Their high water content helps ward off dehydration and combat the heat while their refreshing and mild taste appeals to even the pickiest eaters.

Nutritional breakdown of cucumber

According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, 1 cup of raw sliced cucumber with peel (approximately 119 grams) contains 115 grams of water, 16 calories, 0.8 grams of protein, 0.2 grams of fat and 2.9 grams of carbohydrate (including 0.9 grams of fiber and 1.8 grams of sugar.

One cup of cucumber provides 11% of vitamin K, 4% of vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and manganese and 2% of vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc and copper needs for the day.
 

Cucumbers also contain lignans, which research has shown my decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as several types of cancer. 

Possible health benefits of consuming cucumber


Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many adverse health conditions. Many studies have suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods like cucumber decreases the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and overall mortality while promoting a healthy complexion, increased energy, and overall lower weight.


Hydration

Made up of mostly water and full of important electrolytes, cucumber is a perfect food to have on hand during the hot summer months to prevent dehydration. Adding cucumber to water is a great way to increase water consumption as well.


Skin


When used topically, cucumber has a cooling and soothing effect that decreases swelling, irritation and inflammation. Cucumber slices can be placed on the eyes to decrease morning puffiness or placed on the skin to alleviate and treat sunburn.


Bone health

Low intakes of vitamin K have been associated with a higher risk for bone fracture. Adequate vitamin K consumption can be achieved by eating a proper intake of fruits and vegetables (one cup of cucumber provides 11% of your daily needs) and is important for improving calcium absorption essential for optimal bone health.
 

How to incorporate more cucumber into your diet


Cucumbers should be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week to maintain their freshness. Some cucumbers are treated with a wax coating after they are picked; do not wash these before storing but make sure to wash thoroughly or peel before consuming. Avoid cucumbers with ends that are shriveled or withered.


Cucumbers are best when consumed raw and have a mild taste and cool crunch that make them a great addition to any salad or sandwich.

  • Try mixing sliced cucumbers, tomatoes and feta cheese for a Greek style side dish
  • Jazz up your water by adding mint leaves and cucumber for a refreshing treat
  • Slice cucumbers into thick slices and dip them in your favorite hummus.
